Showcasing local artists - NWTC seeks to purchase new works through call for art
MARINETTE/OCONTO COUNTY – Local artists have the opportunity to see their work displayed around the campuses of Northeast Wisconsin Technical College (NWTC) as the college has once again opened its call for art — a process which has allowed the college to acquire nearly 400 pieces in its permanent collection over the years.
4-H member from Krakow wins $1,000 scholarship
The Wisconsin 4-H Foundation awarded Amber Seitz, of Krakow, a $1,000 Oscar G. and Mary M. Woelfel Memorial Scholarship. Seitz has been active in her 4-H Club in Oconto County for 10 years. Her projects are focused on livestock and agriculture, showing swine, sheep and dairy cows at the county fair and state fair. She has held several leadership positions including Oconto County 4-H Leader’s Association secretary and president of her 4-H club.
Kocken sentenced for officer shooting

On the afternoon of June 25, 2024, Oconto County Judge Michael Judge sentenced Alisha Kocken to 16 years in prison for shooting Oconto Falls police officer Nicole Blaskowski in the chest and head with the service revolver she had wrestled away. Kocken received credit for the 1,054 days she has already received in custody, so the net sentence essentially meets the recommendation of a 13-year prison term in a plea agreement Kocken signed in March.
Data says visitors love Oconto County as area sees recording-breaking year in 2023
Oconto County tourism had a record year in 2023, contributing $140 million to the local economy, according to new data from the Wisconsin Department of Tourism. The total tourism economic impact — a figure based on visitor spending, employment income and tax impacts — rose 4.4%, from $134 million in 2022.
