HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: District 2-6A capsules

    Midland Legacy at Allen

    >> Time, Date, Place: 7 p.m. Friday, Eagle Stadium

    >> Records: Midland Legacy 0-0; Allen 0-0

    >> Last season: Allen 52, Midland Legacy 35

    >> Notes: It’s a chance for revenge for the Rebels who were knocked out of the playoffs last year against Allen in a 52-35 defeat in the region semifinals. The Rebels will be tested early in the season as they face Allen, Euless Trinity, Lake Travis and Abilene High all in consecutive weeks during nondistrict play. Ten starters return (five on offense and five on defense) for Midland Legacy which is coming off a 10-3 record. The team is without quarterback Marcos Davila as Jaden Rogers will look to take over as a dual-threat quarterback. Wide receiver Aiden Serrano is back after compiling 1,008 yards and 11 touchdowns a year ago. … Coached by Lee Wiginton, the Eagles look to once again make a deep run in the playoffs as running back Micah Ellis (1,099 yards, 16 touchdowns rushing) looks to make things difficult for opposing defenses. Quarterback Brady Bricker (1,580 yards, six touchdowns) is also back also back on offense for the Eagles.

    Midland High at Southlake Carroll

    >> Time, Date, Place: 7 p.m., Friday at Dragon Stadium

    >> Records: Midland High 0-0, Southlake Carroll 0-0

    >> Last season: Did not play

    >> Notes: Midland High is coming off its best season in recent years, going 9-3 last year and getting back to the postseason for the first time since 2018. The Bulldogs’ reward? Getting to start off the new season against 6A powerhouse Southlake Carroll. There’s no reason to doubt the Bulldogs getting back to the playoffs this season but Friday’s game will provide them with a good, early-season challenge. Fourth-year head coach Thad Fortune has 12 starters (six on offense and six on defense) returning from last year’s team. … Southlake Carroll will be young this season but the expectations remain sky high every year for the Dragons. Southlake Carroll is coming off a 13-2 showing which ended with a loss in the state semifinals but only returns five starters (four on offense and one on defense).

    Wolfforth Frenship at Byron Nelson

    >> Time, Date, Place: 7 p.m. Friday in Abilene

    >> Records: Wolfforth Frenship (0-0), Byron Nelson (0-0)

    >> Last season: Did not play

    >> Notes: Wolfforth Frenship is looking to replace some key players from last year, most notably Hudson Hutcheson who led the state in passing yards per game last season. However, it’s not all bad news as Frenship brings back wide receivers Leyton Stone and Chase Campbell as well as number of players on defense. The Tigers should once again be playoff material this season. … Byron Nelson figures to be a tough test for the Tigers as the Bobcats return eight starters (four on offends and four on defense) from last year’s 13-1 team that made it to the region semifinals. Wide receiver and defensive back Leo Almanza (26-504, nine touchdowns receiving; 31 tackles, four interceptions) is a versatile threat.

Abilene High at San Angelo Central

Time, Date, Place: 7 p.m. Friday at San Angelo Stadium

    >> Records: Abilene High 0-0, San Angelo Central 0-0

    >> Last season: Did not play.

    >> Notes: If Abilene High is better than last year, then the rest of Class 5A Division I will have reason to worry. The Eagles return most of their offense from last year’s 11-3 squad that made it to the region finals as seven starters return while only three return on defense. Quarterback Brayden Henry takes over after leading the team in rushing as a sophomore (850 yards, 12 touchdowns). … It’s a brutal way to begin things at San Angelo Central for new head coach Mark Smith. The Bobcats are coming off a difficult 1-9 season which included a last-place finish in the District 2-6A standings but do manage to return 17 starters (eight on offense and nine on defense). Quarterback Christian English (2,600 yards, 18 touchdowns passing; 900 yards, 17 touchdowns rushing) will be the heart and soul of San Angelo Central’s offense which averaged 34.1 points per game last year.
