ODESSA, Texas (KMID/KPEJ) – Odessa High School Quarterback Mikey Cota announced yesterday on X that he is committing to UTPB to continue his football career. He picked up his offer in late June after he attended the Falcons camp.

“When I first got the offer I was so excited I wanted to commit the first day I got the offer. I decided to wait until the visit, and once I visited, it just clicked,” Cota said.

Cota is going into his senior year at OHS with a new coaching staff. Last season the Bronchos finished 5-5 overall, and 2-3 in the district and Cota threw for 3,054 yards to go along with 41 total touchdowns.

There are a lot of questions when it comes to a new coaching staff. “First we were wondering who would be the head coach? What are we going to run? We got a head coach who wants to throw the ball and I’m happy,” Cota said.

Cota is happy to be staying in Odessa, and likes that his family will be close by. “They will be able to go to all my games and I will still be able to visit them. I’m very comfortable here in Odessa.”

“I feel myself fitting in at UTPB for sure. Coach McCullough is a good coach. It was his first year and they already won the Lone Star Conference Championship and went to the playoffs. I could see myself there for sure.”

He added that he is looking forward to the season and that is what his focus is on. “I’m ready for it, and I’m just trying to get better before the season. Yes, it’s coming fast, but just thinking about one game at a time.”

The Bronchos will open their non-district schedule against the Amarillo Sandies on August 29th at home.
