Oglethorpe County man pleads to crimes that will land him in federal prison
An Oglethorpe County man pleaded guilty to drug and gun charges Monday in U.S. District Court knowing that he will spend the next several years in prison. Mandrell Antwoin Hull, 43, pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute cocaine and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, according to a release from the Middle District U.S. Attorney’s Office in Macon. ...

Twirlers take shot at national championship
Four of Polly Fleming’s students — Claire Kelly, Bailey Wray, Peyton Lewis and Mya Jewell — will compete at the National Baton Twirling Championships at Notre Dame on July 16-19 in South Bend, Indiana. Wray, Lewis and Jewell are from Oglethorpe County; Kelly is from Jackson County.
Obituary: Julia Hardman Colquitt
Julia Hardman Colquitt, a beloved member of the community, died July 2, 2024, at the age of 95. She was born on June 22, 1929, in Oglethorpe County, Georgia, to her late parents Julius Albert and Agnes Mae Harris Hardman. She was also preceded in death by her daughter-in-law, Carol Ann Colquitt, granddaughter, Katie Colquitt and brother, Guy Hardman.
Melanie Miller becomes the first Black woman to run for Georgia House of Representatives District 124
Republican incumbent Trey Rhodes and Democrat Melanie Miller are candidates in the election for the Georgia House of Representatives District 124 on Nov. 5. Miller’s candidacy makes her the first Black woman to run for the District 124 seat, which includes parts of east Athens, Winterville, Oglethorpe County, Taliaferro County, Putnam County and Greene County.
