Brit Hume says voters may ask if Trump picked Vance because he ‘sucked up effectively’

Fox News analyst Brit Hume questioned former President Trump’s pick of Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio) to be his vice presidential candidate , pointing to Vance’s past harsh criticisms of Trump.

Hume posited that voters may come to question how Vance became the candidate over other top picks.

“You think, well, is this person, how did he get the job? Did he get it because he was really the best qualified to be president?” Hume said. “Or did he get it because he sucked up effectively to the nominee? People will have questions about that.”

Vance was a fierce critic of Trump before becoming a close ally, once calling himself a “never-Trumper,” and dubbed Trump “a total fraud,” “a moral disaster” and “America’s Hitler” during the 2016 campaign.

But he has since been in lockstep with Trump, riding his support to a Senate seat in 2022. Vance has also backed Trump’s baseless claims that Trump won the 2020 election, and said that he would have considered fraudulent electoral votes if he was the vice president on Jan. 6, 2021, when then-Vice President Mike Pence refused.

“Some people may look at this and remember what JD Vance used to say about Donald Trump,” Hume warned.

A political novice at 39 years old with less than two years of elected experience, some Republicans have hailed Vance’s selection as a pick that could bolster Trump’s support among young conservatives.

“J.D. has had a very successful business career in Technology and Finance, and now, during the Campaign, will be strongly focused on the people he fought so brilliantly for, the American Workers and Farmers in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, Minnesota, and far beyond,” Trump said in a Truth Social post announcing his pick on Monday.
