(The Center Square) – Ohio’s Democratic political leaders are lining up behind Vice President Kamala Harris.

According to the Ohio Democratic Party, late Monday night, the state’s Democratic delegates to the upcoming national convention voted overwhelmingly to pledge support to Harris.

Also Monday night, Democratic lawmakers released a letter endorsing Harris for president.

“Ohio Democratic delegates to the national convention voted overwhelmingly to pledge their support to Vice President Kamala Harris tonight,” the Ohio Democratic Party posted on social media. “As the state that will determine control of the House and Senate, it’s crucial we have a candidate at the top of the ticket who will fight for Ohio’s working families.”

Ohio joined a long list of states that have pledged Democratic delegates to Harris, all but locking up the presidential nomination for the vice president.

National Democrats are expected to meet Wednesday to decide the rules for the convention, which begins Aug. 19 in Chicago. In May, the group announced it would conduct a virtual role call to nominate a president and vice president to ensure the selection appears on the Ohio ballot.

However, in early June, Gov. Mike DeWine signed a law that extended the deadline for parties to nominate candidates formally. It contained an emergency provision to allow it to take effect June 3, eliminating the need for a virtual role call by Democrats.

Also, Democratic lawmakers in the Ohio House and Senate released a letter supporting Harris as presidential nominee.

Democratic Caucus leaders wrote, “Vice President Harris’ leadership has inspired countless Americans, especially women and people of color. As the nation’s first female president, we know there is no doubt whatsoever that she will continue the fight for reproductive freedom, increased wages, strong unions, safe communities, and thriving small businesses. Her commitment to fairness and representation gives us confidence that under her administration, more Americans will feel seen, heard and supported than ever before.”
