Vance was announced as former president Donald Trump’s running mate, the Ohio senator hasn’t done himself any favors. He made an offhand joke about Diet Mountain Dew that was so unbearably awkward it made national headlines. We learned just how cynical his far-right, anti-LGBTQ+ MAGA pivot really was when news broke that he once brought baked goods to a trans friend recovering from top surgery. Polls have detected anomalously low favorability ratings for a brand-new VP pick, leading many political pundits to question whether Republicans will get “buyers’ remorse” over the pick.

The problem, as Vance saw it, was that the country was essentially run “via the Democrats, via our corporate oligarchs by a bunch of childless cat ladies.” Vice President Kamala Harris was among those identified, even though she has two stepchildren.
