    πŸ“… Today in History: In 1963, in response to instability at the University of Alabama after desegregation attempts there and racially charged confrontations at protests around the country, President John Kennedy called on Congress to pass what became the Civil Rights Act of 1964 during a live address on TV and radio. It was intended to guarantee federal voting rights, legal standing, educational opportunities and access to public facilities for all Americans. Kennedy also urged every American family to help heal its racial divide, noting β€œlaw alone cannot make men see right.”

    Despite opposition, commissioners vote to buy land for proposed Oklahoma County jail

    Calls for Oklahoma County Commissioner Myles Davidson's resignation have heightened as county commissioners voted Monday to buy land for a proposed new jail site.

    The Board of Oklahoma County Commissioners voted 2-to-1 to buy 71 acres of property at 1901 E. Grand Blvd, a heavily industrial area in Oklahoma City near Crooked Oak Public Schools and just blocks away from Oklahoma City/Del City border. Board chairman and District 2 County Commissioner Brian Maughan said the move was an effort to utilize a $50 million allocation of federal American Rescue Plan Act funds earmarked for a behavioral health facility.
