(NEXSTAR) — Hours after the track competition gets underway in Paris, Team USA is already setting records.

The U.S. mixed 4×400 meter relay team set a world record when Vernon Norwood, Shamier Little, Bryce Deadmon and Kaylyn Brown finished the four laps in 3 minutes, 7.41 seconds to break the mark of 3:08.80 set at world championships last year.

“We just wanted to execute on the big stage,” Little told Nexstar’s Alyssa Orange after the race.

You may have never heard of the mixed 4×400 meter relay. The event, in which men and women compete together, is only 5 years old.

There’s no medal for this world record. The victory simply places the Americans in Saturday’s final.

Orange asked Brown, “when you saw a world record, what was the first thing that popped into your mind?”

“I’m tired,” Brown replied while giggling.

The team will need to rest up ahead of Saturday’s race for a medal where the record will be in jeopardy once again.
