Cook departs as Chamber executive director
The Greater Bridgton Chamber of Commerce announced Monday that Angela Cook, who has served as the Executive Director, has left the Chamber. “Angie has been an integral part of our organization since she joined in 2015 as the office manager,” the Chamber said in a statement to The News. “During her tenure, Angie built strong relationships on behalf of the Chamber and has been a great source of support for our member businesses. Her dedication and commitment have greatly contributed to the evolution of our Chamber.”

Our small town sure fills up for Independence Day, doesn’t it? Now, I don’t have any hard statistics for this year’s attendance numbers yet, though I’m sure someone somewhere in the town office is busy tabulating the data even now, but speaking just anecdotally, doesn’t it feel like this year the 4th of July week here in Bridgton was somehow even busier than is traditional? Oh, the usual signs and suspects are all in appearance; you can’t turn left onto Main Street, all the camps and inns and motels are filled up, and down to the supermarket cookout supplies run worryingly low while checkout lines run worryingly long, trending away somewhere into the frozen dairy aisle.

It almost seemed like the town of Orono was not going to have an arts festival this summer that so many Mainers looked forward to since 2011. Stillwater Community Arts previously hosted "Artsapalooza," Orono's original arts festival that celebrated the talents of so many artists in Maine for well over the past decade, but stated in March of 2024 that they would no longer be able to continue after 13 years of service. No reason was given as to why, but it was mentioned that putting on the event took many hours of fundraising.

Man Sentenced to 18 Years in Prison for Attempted Murder in Maine
A 35-year-old man will spend 18 years in prison for trying to strangle and kill the mother of his children and assaulting an officer in Waterville.
