Security camera video led detectives to arrest a suspect who faces a charge of first-degree murder in a stabbing over the weekend that killed a 42-year-old man at a Yuba County gas station.

Michael Daniel Ray Collier, 27, of Linda remained in custody Tuesday in connection with the fatal Linda stabbing. Collier is accused of stabbing Elva Leroy Frederick II of Olivehurst, said Katy Goodson, a spokeswoman for the Yuba County Sheriff’s Office .

Collier was being held at the Yuba County Jail in Marysville. His bail amount has been set at $1 million for the murder charge, along with an additional $15,000 bail for a drug possession charge.

Jail records show he was booked at the jail several hours after the incident was reported at 12:05 a.m. Saturday at the gas station in the 1100 block of North Beale Road. The stabbing was initially reported as a “physical disturbance call,” the Sheriff’s Office said.

Deputies arrived at the scene and found Frederick, who had been wounded in an apparent stabbing. Medics took Frederick to a hospital. Despite life-saving measures, Frederick died at the hospital, sheriff’s officials said.

Sheriff’s detectives took over the homicide investigation. Sheriff’s officials said the detectives reviewed security camera video and identified Collier as the fatal stabbing suspect.

Jail records show authorities took Collier into custody near Garden Avenue and Cedar Lane, a few blocks southwest of the gas station where the deadly stabbing occurred. Detectives questioned Collier at the Sheriff’s Office, and he was subsequently arrested in the homicide.

The Yuba County District Attorney’s Office filed a murder charge against Collier, along with an enhancement for allegedly using a deadly and dangerous weapon in the murder.

On Monday afternoon, Collier appeared for his arraignment in court. He entered a not-guilty plea, and Judge Benjamin Wirtschafter scheduled Collier to return to court July 31 for further proceedings in his murder case.
