    Capital Lakefair begins: The annual downtown Olympia festival, launched in 1957, will again take over Heritage Park from Wednesday through Sunday, July 17-21. The festival opens daily at noon and closes at 11 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, closing at midnight Sunday to accommodate the grand finale fireworks over Capitol Lake. The festival includes the Grand Parade on Saturday afternoon, a car show, 50+ in the Park, live entertainment and Grand Finale Fireworks on Sunday that are all free to attend. There are also a variety of food vendors, craft vendor booths and carnival rides/games that operate all five days of the festival. For details, visit the Lakefair website .

    Music in the Park with Slainte: Irish rock band Slainte will perform at the Olympia Downtown Alliance’s 2024 Music in the Park concert series. The hourlong concert will begin at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 17, in Sylvester Park, 615 Washington St. SE, Olympia. Concertgoers are advised to bring a chair or blanket and encouraged to pick up takeout from a downtown restaurant. Picnics are welcome, too. The concert series continues every Wednesday in July. Admission is free.

    Explore the Northwest Passage with David Nicandri: Join author and historian David Nicandri at the Washington State Legislative Building in Olympia for a free program on “The Evolution of the Northwest Passage as a Cartographic Image: 1753-1853.” You will hear tales from exploration history and learn about the cartographic evolution of this fabled route. The program will cover the voyages of explorers such as Captain James Cook, Peter Pond, and Alexander Mackenzie. This Washington State Historical Society program will take place from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the Columbia Room of the Legislative Building, 416 Snyder Avenue SW, Olympia.     Ralph’s Thriftway 80th anniversary: Ralph’s Thriftway will host an 80th Anniversary event from 1-4 p.m. Friday, July 19. Dick’s Food Truck, a mobile version of Seattle’s iconic burger joint, will make its first public stop in Olympia at the event from 2-5 p.m.; the Fisher Scones Food Truck also will be there from 12:30 to 5:30 p.m. Also, through Sunday, July 21st, the store will offer specials and samples from vendors.

    Lacey in Tune music and a movie: The music begins at 7 p.m. at Huntamer Park with Credence Revelation, a Creedence Clearwater Revival tribute band fronted by Randy Linder. Then at dusk, the city will screen “Super Mario Bros,” a PG-rated animated movie following Brooklyn plumbers and brothers Mario and Luigi through a mysterious pipe to a magical new world. Food vendors Chick-fil-A, River Ridge HS Band Boosters and Sunshine Scoop Ice Cream will be on site. Plus VIP Mobile gaming will be in attendance with games such as Mario Kart, Injustice League, Minecraft, and Supersmash Bros from 6-9 p.m. Admission is free.

    Saturday, July 20

    Lakefair Parade: The Lakefair Grand Parade, which includes local and regional groups and floats, kicks off with pre-parade festivities at 4:45 p.m., and the parade will begin at 5 p.m., traveling north from Capitol Way and 20th Avenue, past the Capitol into downtown, and ending at Fifth Avenue near the bridge.

    Schafer State Park centennial anniversary: Schafer State Park is ready to welcome visitors to its expanded campground, the result of a two-year renovation of the historic park on the Satsop River near Elma. Schafer’s new campground has 30 sites that add to its 38 existing sites and campground. Construction improvements also include a new restroom building, welcome center, reservoir for the park’s potable water system, landscaping, entry road and roads through the campgrounds. Schafer is included on the National Register of Historic Places. It officially became a state park in 1924 after a logging company donated the land to the state. Its structures were developed by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) in the 1930s. The park’s new features were built in the original National Park Service Rustic style to match the historic WPA-built structures in the park. To commemorate the park’s centennial anniversary, the parks is hosting a community event with a free food truck, yard games, live music, storytelling, square dancing in period costumes, museum exhibits with historic artifacts and other family-friendly activities. The public is invited to attend this free event from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 20.

    Thurston County Furniture Bank open: The nonprofit all-volunteer Thurston County Furniture Bank is open the first and third Saturdays of every month from 9 a.m. to noon at 2121 Log Cabin Road SE, Olympia. The Furniture Bank building is at the back of the parking lot. Donations of gently used furniture are accepted. Pick up of donations can be arranged but usually takes 2-4 weeks. Those looking for furniture are welcomed.

    Slug Fest: Join the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife Habitat at Home program at Northwest Trek Wildlife Park for an unusual of celebration of an important terrestrial mollusk: slugs! Why? Washington state slugs are among the biggest and best, but they’re also vital to our ecosystem, breaking down organic matter and returning it to the forest floor, where it becomes food for plants and trees. WDFW will share Habitat at Home resources and activities from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Northwest Trek, 11610 Trek Drive East, Eatonville. Admission purchased online is $23 for adults, $21 for seniors and $16 for youth 3 to 12.

    Free YMCA July Community Day: Bring your friends and family for this free Community Day at the Shelton Family YMCA. Lift some weights, take a walk on the treadmill, or try a workout class between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the YMCA, 3101 N Shelton Springs Rd, Shelton.

    Sunday, July 21

    Lakefair fireworks: Come enjoy this community favorite on the last day of Lakefair. The Grand Finale Fireworks display takes place over Capitol Lake in Olympia, and can be viewed from Heritage Park, Deschutes Parkway, Capitol Campus or anywhere with a view of the lake. This year’s event is presented by the Washington’s Lottery . The free show begins at 10 p.m.
