Omak homeowner shoots, kills vehicle prowling suspect

OMAK, Wash. -- A suspected vehicle prowler was shot and killed by a homeowner in Omak during a physical confrontation Sunday night.

According to the Omak Police Department, a homeowner was armed and approached a suspect who was seen tampering with the homeowner's vehicle around 7:15 p.m. on Hanford Street near Omak Avenue.

Police say the homeowner did not use the gun, but the suspect attacked the homeowner knocking them down.

The homeowner's significant other fired a warning shot into the ground, but police say the assault did not stop. The significant other then pulled the suspect off the homeowner, but the suspect reengaged in the assault.

At that time, police say the homeowner shot the suspect once. The suspect later died at an area hospital.

Omak Police say an investigation is underway into the use of deadly force and their findings will be turned over to the prosecutor's office to see if any charges will be filed.
