The Chicago White Sox added some organizational depth last week by signing outfielder Canaan Smith-Njigba to a minor-league deal. The 25-year-old is the older brother of NFL wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who plays for the Seattle Seahawks.

A 5-foot-11 left-handed hitter, Canaan Smith-Njigba was a fourth-round draft pick of the New York Yankees in 2017. He was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates as part of the Jameson Taillon deal in January 2021.

The Dallas, Texas native owns a .270/.378/.419 slash line with 43 home runs, 115 doubles, and 271 RBIs across 1,780 career minor-league plate appearances. Smith-Njigba slashed .135/.250/.243 with one double and five RBIs in brief stints with the Pirates totaling 18 MLB games between 2022 and 2023.

A paltry .212/.344/.330 slash line in 2024 with Triple-A Indianapolis led to his release from the Pirates organization on July 6.

The White Sox sent Smith-Njigba to the Arizona Complex League for a tune-up stint last week before assigning him to Double-A Birmingham Tuesday.
