The Chicago Fire wasted very little time before filling the roster spot that was vacated by Xherdan Shaqiri .

The Fire have acquired Ariel Lassiter from CF Montréal in exchange for $75,000 in 2024 General Allocation Money (GAM) with an additional $75,000 in 2025 GAM going to Montréal should Lassiter hit specific performance-based marks with Chicago.

Lassiter, a Costa Rican international, joined Montréal in 2023 and has scored four goals with the Canadian side in 45 MLS appearances (37 starts). The attacker’s highest-scoring season was in 2022 with Inter Miami when he scored four goals before going to Montréal in the offseason.

Only 29, Lassiter joins the Fire after scoring three goals and creating five assists with Montréal in MLS this season. None of the Fire’s backup strikers have scored a goal in MLS play in 2024, so his addition will be welcome within a dressing room that’s been starved for attacking options.

The Fire only have nine matches to climb back into the playoff picture if they want to qualify for the postseason for the first time since 2017. Adding Lassiter is a solid short-term move for the Fire, allowing roster flexibility for whoever the incoming sporting director becomes.
