News broke late Sunday morning at the FedEx St. Jude Championship as PGA Tour star Jordan Spieth concluded his round, finishing the tournament at +9. But the press conference was the real story.

Spieth, 31, announced that he'll be ending his season to undergo surgery on the tendon in his left wrist, per Golf Channel's Todd Lewis .

    Long Overdue

This news isn't surprising. Jordan Spieth has been a shell of himself for quite some time as the wrist injury he'll now have surgery on has been hampering his performance.

Spieth hasn't won an event in over two years. The once-promising young star has faltered on the course though he continues to draw crowds to every event he attends. But the 2024 season was easily his worst performance to date, necessitating a change.

I've been calling for Jordan Spieth to shut it down and address his injury for several months. His wrist has been heavily wrapped and taped — almost to the point of a cast — all season long. It seems Spieth's pride may have delayed the inevitable.

Spieth's decision to finally undergo surgery is a positive development as the PGA Tour needs players like him to carry the torch in a new era of golf. The game is more exciting when Spieth is in the hunt on Sunday afternoons. Hopefully he can get back to where he was several years ago before the injury and continue to bolster what's already a hall-of-fame career.
