The Chicago White Sox announced that relief pitcher Jimmy Lambert underwent season-ending shoulder surgery. Lambert has been a member of the injured list for all of the 2024 season. Due to the nagging shoulder soreness, the club shut down Lambert two weeks into spring training . The 29-year-old sought a second opinion from Dr. Neal ElAttrache, the head team physician of the Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Dodgers.
Afterward, updates from the team and media were sparse, while Lambert remained on the injured list. The team announced that he would begin a rehab assignment in the Arizona Complex League, but he was shut down after two outings. The report states that ElAttrache's surgery will end the right-hander's season.
Lambert had a disappointing 2023 campaign after breaking out in 2022. The right-hander landed twice on the injury list with right ankle issues , eventually leading to a dreadful performance and demotion to the Triple-A Charlotte Knights.
The Neverending Story
The White Sox, who are never strangers to pitching injuries, dealt with many during spring training and throughout the season. Jesse Scholtens and Edgar Navarro underwent Tommy John surgery during Spring Training. Davis Martin and reliever Matt Foster rehabbed from the same surgery and recently returned to action .
Shane Drohan, the White Sox Rule Five draft pick from the Boston Red Sox, had surgery to relieve nerve compression in his shoulder in the off-season. He remained on the injured list until the White Sox designated him for assignment. Dominic Leone has made multiple trips to the IL. Chicago recently placed him on the 60-day IL.
Joining Leone on the 60-day IL is starting pitcher Mike Clevinger, who underwent disc replacement surgery on his neck and will miss the remainder of the season.
Off-season acquisitions John Brebbia and Steve Wilson have landed on the injured list multiple times. Relievers Jordan Leasure and Michael Soroka are currently rehabbing from injuries , as is rookie starter Drew Thorpe.

Lambert's season-long IL stint kept him on the major league roster and accrued a year of service time. This means the righty will enter his arbitration years while remaining under team control for three years.
The litany of injuries to White Sox hurlers leads one to believe they need all the arms possible. However, if Lambert will likely spend most of next season on the injured list, Chicago may decide to part ways with the soon-to-be 30-year-old.
