Bears Lose TE Brendan Bates to New York Jets on Waivers

The Chicago Bears solidified their 53-man roster on Tuesday. Although the roster is "set", the next few days will provide some additional storylines that will be covered at a later time. For now, the roster is in place as teams assemble their practice squads.

For the Bears, this is the first season under Ryan Poles' tenure where he elected to stand pat and not claim a player off the wire. Now, there is a chance that Poles placed a claim on someone, but with a less favorable waiver position, the Bears may have simply been unlucky in their attempts at adding a player.

On the other hand, one notable preseason standout has been lost to the waiver wire. After six catches for 100 yards in the preseason, TE Brendan Bates caught the attention of the New York Jets, who claimed the Kentucky product from the Bears. The Bears were reportedly hoping to bring Bates back as a member of their practice squad .

The Bears made a pair of trades for DE Darrell Taylor and DT Chris Williams in the last week, with both additions making the final roster. Perhaps those two took up a potential roster spot for someone like Bates. Unfortunately, he will get the shot as a 53-man roster player in the NFL but not in Chicago.

Bates was signed as an undrafted free agent during the offseason. An unassuming preseason star, Bates really made an impression on the league during training camp. Building a roster is always a numbers game, and the Bears were on the wrong side of it with Bates moving on to the Jets.
