Chicago Red Stars Trade Penelope Hocking to Bay FC

The Chicago Red Stars continued to reshape their roster ahead of the Transfer Deadline, trading Penelope Hocking to Bay FC.

Chicago honored a request by Hocking, who grew up in Southern California, to be closer to home, according to the announcement .

Chicago will receive $350,000 in total transfer fees from Bay FC, with $250,000 of it coming in 2024 and the other $100,000 in 2025. Chicago also has a 10% sell-on clause should Bay FC move Hocking in the near future.

Hocking was drafted by the Red Stars in the first round (seventh overall) after a standout career at both USC and Penn State. Her five goals in all competitions as a rookie in 2023 were the most on the team and Hocking scored the lone goal for Chicago in their match at Wrigley Field. She’s tied for second on the team with fellow 2023 draft pick Ally Schlegel after scoring four times in 2024.

The move creates more roster flexibility for the Red Stars in the offseason as Hocking is under contract through the 2025 NWSL season and the newly signed Rosella Ayane is only tied to the club through the end of 2024.
