The Chicago White Sox announced a significant blow to their pitching rotation as right-hander Drew Thorpe is slated to undergo season-ending surgery to address a bone spur in his pitching elbow. This development comes after Thorpe, a young prospect who has been part of two monumental trades, showcased both promising talent and recent struggles on the mound.

Thorpe, who made headlines earlier this year owing to his involvement in blockbuster trades, including one that brought superstar outfielders Juan Soto and Trent Grisham to the Yankees, has had quite the journey.
His transition to the White Sox was marked by a stunning Double-A performance that positioned him as a top-100 prospect. However, his major league debut saw a mix of impressive starts and concerning setbacks, culminating in a right forearm flexor strain and a trip to the IL on Aug. 1 that ultimately has now led to the decision for season-ending surgery.

Dr. Kenneth Akizuki, a respected name in sports orthopedics, will carry out the procedure to remove a bone spur from Thorpe’s pitching elbow. The White Sox are confident in Thorpe's recovery, expecting him back—fully rehabbed and ready—for the spring training.
Thorpe struggled with a diminished strikeout rate and put together a few alarming performances in his last few outings of 2024. Despite the rather unfortunate ending to 2024, Thorpe's surgery represents not just an end to an up-and-down season but also offers hope for a healthier and stronger return in 2025.
