The Bear Assessment: 7 Key Takeaways from Bears' Week 1 Win Over Titans

A win is, without question, a win. The Chicago Bears took care of business, albeit in unconventional fashion , against the Tennessee Titans in Week 1 of the 2024 NFL season. While it wasn't what fans expected (or at least hoped for), the Bears walked away with a victory and started the 2024 campaign undefeated.

My life has had two eras: that which came before Caleb Williams and all that now follows until my eventual death.

    I'll relax.

In reality, though, the debut of Williams and the new Bears offense was disappointing. The Bears totaled a meager 148 yards of offense, had a third down conversion rate of 15% (2-for-13), and scored zero touchdowns. There were moments of suspect play-calling exasperated by sloppy penalties in critical moments of the game.

However, Williams' debut was the most disappointing aspect for Bears fans. Williams went 14-29 for 93 yards , throwing no touchdowns and no interceptions (though he probably should've had one in the second quarter). The rookie had multiple bad misses throughout the game, took a brutal 19-yard sack in the second quarter that took Chicago out of field goal range, and dropped a snap in the third quarter on third and short to end the offensive drive.

But Williams had bright spots on Sunday as well. He continued to show his ability to avoid pressure in the pocket and flashed his next-level knack for throwing on the run. Williams can use his legs when needed, a necessary trait in today's NFL. The USC product also limited turnovers (you can't limit turnovers to more than zero).

Overall, Williams looked like a rookie. Entering the season with massive expectations was always going to put him in a difficult position. It's always frustrating to watch mistakes on the field when you expect the messiah.

It's Week 1, take a breath. Williams will get better. The offense will get better. Sure, if a 93-yard day is Williams' season high, then we have an issue. But I don't expect that to happen.

Williams is a special player. He will bounce back.
