As the 2024 season nears its end, the Chicago Cubs continue to scour the market for bullpen arms. Right-hander Jimmy Herget is the latest waiver claim to join the organization.

On Friday, the Cubs claimed Herget off waivers from the Atlanta Braves. The 31-year-old will report to Triple-A Iowa. To make room on the 40-man roster, the Cubs are calling Brennen Davis up and placing him on the MLB 60-day injured list.

It's been rough sledding for the young prospect. This time, Davis's season is over due to a fractured ankle . The 24-year-old faces a long road ahead as he recovers for the 2025 season.

With Herget, the Cubs are acquiring another arm to provide organizational depth. The veteran reliever has bounced around during his career and made eight appearances for the Braves this season.

It remains to be seen if Herget will make it to the Cubs' roster, but he has a shot to finish the season strong and leave the team with a good impression. The Cubs are willing to find potential everywhere. Herget has the chance to be with the club in Spring Training for 2025.

The season appears all but over for the Cubs. Any impact to the roster will have to be focused on the future. Herget serves as an interesting low-risk option for the Cubs to evaluate. If he pans out, this acquisition could pay big dividends.

It won't be the first time that the Cubs have sought a diamond in the rough. Tyson Miller and Jorge Lopez are recent examples of quality contributors to a previously struggling bullpen.
