The Chicago Cubs Continue to be Mired in Mediocrity

With series losses to the Rockies and Athletics, it's pretty much over for the 2024 Chicago Cubs. There's nothing else to call this season but a colossal failure from top to bottom.

The 2023 season should have been motivation to add more talent during this past offseason. It turns out that wasn't the case. While bringing Cody Bellinger back and adding Shota Imanaga were necessary moves, it has become evident as the 2024 season winds down that they needed to do more.

The addition of another power bat and a starting catcher were some of the many items on the list last offseason. Once again, those needs still reside at the top of the to-do list. This could have been avoided had the team acted in time.

The Cubs are in desperate need of a star. One that hits for power to be specific. Shohei Ohtani and Juan Soto were available last offseason and the Cubs decided not to play in that end of the pool.

Soto could hit the market again after a successful season with the Yankees. If there's any sense of urgency, the Cubs could flex their big market muscle and make it difficult for the all-star to say no.

It doesn't seem to be how this team operates. Jed Hoyer is perfectly content to wait the market out and have it come back to his price range.

The Cubs cannot continue to bargain shop if they have postseason aspirations. If they truly believe that they can take that next step, the money will need to be spent in the offseason.

A farm system that is thriving can only go so far if it isn't complimented by big-league talent. They don't have to act like the Tampa Bay Rays and division-rival Milwaukee Brewers.

As the only big market team in their division, they are continuing to waste their biggest competitive edge. If the Cubs don't use it soon, they run the risk of being an afterthought during Chicago summers.
