Hoover (Ala.) Thompson High School EDGE Jared Smith made his way to Tennessee for the first time in over a year on Saturday as the Vols hosted their Memorial Day 865 Live event. Following the trip, he went in-depth on the visit and more with Volquest. You can see the full video interview above.
The chance to be around the coaches in a more laid back setting was important to Smith, and it was something he enjoyed on Saturday.
“Man, just the opportunity to spend time with the coaches, not just recruiting,” Smith said. “Just having a good time. Just talking with David Sanders down there, we had a good time today. Just getting away from recruiting, just seeing the creativity from everybody and just having fun with everybody.”
Smith has continued to be impressed by veteran defensive assistant Rodney Garner throughout the process.
“Man, his production,” Smith said of what stands out the most about Garner. “He puts top-level guys in the league almost every year. So, I mean, what’s not to like?”
Smith also enjoyed the opportunity to get back around Tennessee Head Coach Josh Heupel during the visit. He has been impressed with the Head Vol as well.
“I just got done talking to him on the field,” Smith said of this. “Just having a good time. He was everywhere with us today, having a good time, too. He tries to get relationships with the players, not just know their names. He tries to know all about them and stuff.”
Smith has a busy slate of official visits coming up, but he says, he has been and remains high on the Vols in the process.
“Tennessee is very high on my list, not a lot of people know that, but Tennessee is very high on my list,” Smith said.
The coveted EDGE rusher is ranked as the No.37 overall prospect in the On3 Industry Rankings and the No.4 overall EDGE. He plans to return to Knoxville the weekend of June 14th for his official visit with the Vols.
