George County (Miss.) quarterback Deuce Knight is coming up on his one-year anniversary for his commitment to Notre Dame. But, as On3’s Steve Wiltfong reported last week, the proverbial walls are closing in.

On Thursday, Wiltfong sat down with Josh Newberg to update the recruitment of the four-star prospect on the latest “Wiltfong Whiparound Show” . On3’s VP of recruiting and transfer portal talked about a potential decision timeline and where things stand for both Auburn and Ole Miss.

“Notre Dame is trying to get this to go into the season,” Wiltfong said. “They’re trying to beat Texas A&M in the opener and rebuild some momentum with Deuce Knight .

“Look, Deuce Knight and his family love Notre Dame. What it offers on and off the field. (Offensive coordinator) Mike Denbrock coached Jayden Daniels — The Heisman Trophy winner, the No. 1 offense in the country,” Wiltfong said. “I think that has resonated. His relationship with (quarterbacks coach) Gino Guidugli . They love (head coach) Marcus Freeman .”

As expected, the top competition for the Irish are two SEC foes. Wiltfong provided an update on what those closest to the Mississippi prospect are saying.

“But I think right now, he sees himself playing in the SEC. So, I think he would have to change his mind back. In talking to sources around Deuce and others with knowledge of the recruitment, he’s got a very keen eye on being closer to home in the SEC.”

This is seemingly coming down to a Hugh Freeze vs Lane Kiffin battle.

“Auburn is the program that has a lot of the momentum right now. He’s built a really good connection with that coaching staff,” Wiltfong said. “He was at Big Cat Weekend, feels comfortable around the players, loves the way that Auburn’s recruiting receivers and loves their track record historically at the quarterback position.”

Lane Kiffin and Co., have made it very clear to Knight he is their guy at quarterback for the 2025 class. The Rebels have seemingly stopped recruiting all other signal callers and have made him priority No. 1 as national signing day gets closer and closer.

Knight has maintained he is committed to Notre Dame, but has also said he won’t close the door all the way for the home state Rebs.

“They’ve been trying to flip him for a while. They’re still in the mix here for Deuce Knight as well. So, Auburn is trying to hold off Ole Miss and keep the momentum with Deuce Knight ,” Wiltfong said. “Ole Miss is a dark horse.”

Ole Miss will stay the course with Deuce Knight regardless of a flip or stick.

Walker Howard , Austin Simmons and AJ Maddox are on the roster. But, the Rebels would love to add a prospect of Knight’s caliber to the room. One source told me earlier this week “it’s a foregone conclusion Deuce Knight will play in the SEC”. If he chooses to play in Oxford, things get very, very interesting for Kiffin and life after Jaxson Dart .

The array of traits in the Ole Miss quarterback room is special. All three of the current Rebs on the roster do many things well. And if you add the Elite 11 MVP into the mix, it would be a wonderful problem to hahve.
