It’s no secret that Colorado could benefit in 2024 from an improved effort along the offensive line.

The general consensus surrounding Colorado’s preseason is that head coach Deion Sanders has indeed made some changes across his offensive front and they’re looking to improve from their less than stellar performance one year ago.

However, when a reporter asked the Buffs head coach about Colorado’s “bolstered” offensive line in 2024, Coach Prime appeared to take exception to the way the journalist worded his question. Bolster is a word which Sanders said isn’t typically in his vocabulary. Sanders asked him to rephrase, where the reporter used the term “beefed up.” Sanders cut him off again.

“How about improved? Let’s say that we’ve improved our offensive line,” Sanders said .

The reporter agreed, and continued his question about how Colorado’s offensive line is meshing, how they’re working in unison, chemistry, etc. Coach Prime hung onto the word chemistry to make his next point.

“What is chemistry? You guys use it all the time,” Sanders asked. “What is it? You guys (the media) work together. You don’t like each other, most of you. You don’t. You definitely don’t love the guy back there — y’all can’t stand him. But y’all work together and you get the job done. We generally have a love and admiration for one another. We really do, whether you throw the word chemistry out or not. Everybody keeps throwing that word out, some of you don’t have chemistry at home, but you go there every day.”

    Ouch.

Journalistic familial disarray aside, Colorado was statistically among the worst offensive lines in the country in 2023. The Buffaloes were 132nd out of 133 teams in terms of sacks allowed after giving up 4.67 sacks per game. The Buffaloes were also ranked 133rd in rushing offense , with 68.9 yards per game on the ground.

To help improve his starting O-line, Sanders reached into the NCAA transfer portal to secure some of his blockers for the upcoming season — one of those being Indiana transfer Khalil Benson . Former Clemson OT Zechariah Owens , former Texas OT Payton Kirkland and others may also fit into the mix for Colorado this season.

The Buffs will begin the 2024 college football season against North Dakota State on Thursday, Aug. 29. Non-conference matchups against Nebraska and in-state rival Colorado State will follow before beginning Big 12 Conference play in Week 4 against Baylor .
