Nebraska is supposedly having a quarterback competition in fall camp. Head coach Matt Rhule has not officially named a starting quarterback. Although, to those who have been around practice, Dylan Railoa certainly feels like the guy for the opener vs. UTEP .

“Rhule has not said it but it’s very obvious to anybody that’s around the program,” Sean Callahan of On3’s Husker Online said during Tuesday’s episode of Andy Staples On3 .

Raiola is one of the more hyped freshman players in all of college football. Flipping from Georgia near National Signing Day, Nebraska fans instantly dreamed of the five-star quarterback taking snaps in Lincoln. They are seemingly on the way toward getting their wish granted.

But when will Rhule make things official? Callahan believes sometime within the next week, a depth chart will be released. Eyes will instantly go to the quarterback spot when some clarification on where the position battle stands — likely naming Raiola the starter.

“They’ll put out a depth chart, is my guess,” Callahan said. “They’ll have one more week of training camp and it wouldn’t surprise me if after this week, if they kind of define things a little clearer.”

While Raiola might wind up the starter, Nebraska still feels good about their overall quarterback room. Heinrich Haarberg will be the presumed backup after leading the Huskers to five wins during the 2023 season. If Rhule decides to put together some packages for Haarberg, there is confidence he can perform.

Today’s college football calls for having a good quarterback on the bench, just in case. Injuries could occur or Raiola could go through some struggles. After all, he is still a true freshman and will be experiencing the college game for the first time.

Nebraska will have a capable and experienced guy ready to enter the game, no matter the situation.

“Heinrich Haarberg was last year’s starter, he took over, and he won all five of Nebraska’s games for them,” Callahan said. “That’s a good backup to have in there. He’s athletic enough to do other things too. If they wanted Heinrich Haarberg to be a wildcat or take on some other roles, he has the ability to do those things too.

“So, they’ve got a good situation in that quarterback room. It’s very hard to have that in the transfer portal era of college football, to have two or three quarterbacks on your roster that you feel good about right now.”
