OU notebook: Another Sawchuk in Norman

Now just over two weeks from the OU season opener, starting to get a better feel of where things stand in third week of preseason camp.

Head coach Brent Venables addressed the media Tuesday as did four players. Here is the best of the best from those player interview sessions.

WR J.J. Hester

Watching Andrel Anthony fight to get back?

“I appreciate it a lot. I know he is going through a lot and just having to come up here and rehab a lot and everything … Know what it takes mentally and physically. So shoutout to Andrel Anthony for coming up here every day and getting his work in.”

CB Dez Malone

Reunion with Doug Deakin?

“That’s lovely. Coach D, that’s my guy. He watched me when I was a pup all the way up to now. He’s literally seen me every step of the way, so that’s like a blessing. I feel like that’s a blessing in disguise that Deak was able to come here.”

Improvement since spring?

“I think I’ve improved a lot. They told me the smarts here is a whole different level. Being around Coach V and Valai, it’s a lot of learning that I took. I’ve become a smarter player just being around these guys.”

Gabe Sawchuk is a Sooner?

“Yea, you know, he uh… I’ll let him tell his own story, I won’t take too much. But he had the opportunity, was looking at couple different other schools, had the opportunity to come to Oklahoma and just loved it every since. He was like ‘I’m gonna take my shot. I’m gonna take my opportunity.’ So it’s been great having him here, great having family. He gives another competitive aspect as well. I can’t lose to my brother. So it’s been a lot of fun.”

Freshmen running backs?

“They’ve been doing great, better than what I did my freshman year I know that. They’ve been doing great. Been taking on a lot of the hard coaching from DeMarco, some of the leaders, like Jovantae and me are stepping up and trying to teach them what we can. Been hitting the thing full speed.”

Michael Boganowski development?

“Oh, he’s a thumper. He’s a hard-hitter for sure. I ain’t gonna lie, he’s got that title for sure. He has a lot to learn but he learns so fast. Like when he first got here, it’s night and day. So that’s like my little brother. I’m taking care of him. And it makes me so proud the way he’s acting.”
