4-star LB Gavin Nix hasn’t shut down his recruitment, but he’ll be hard to pull away from Miami Hurricanes

IMG Academy four-star linebacker Gavin Nix hasn’t formally shut down his recruitment in his month since committing to Miami July 1. But it’ll be particularly hard for another school to pull the No. 155 overall prospect and No. 16 linebacker in the On3 Industry Ranking away from Coral Gables.

Nix, who committed to the Hurricanes following official visits to Miami, Florida and Oregon, wants to keep his recruitment open for the time being, he told CaneSport , although he feels good about his pledge to the Canes. Nix still believes he made the right decision committing to Miami and plans to return to South Florida for game-day visits this fall, although Michigan, Florida State and Oregon are continuing to push for the four-star linebacker. He said several other schools have also kept in touch, and that the Wolverines, Seminoles and Ducks have made the most concerted efforts since his commitment.

“I feel pretty good about (my commitment),” Nix said. “Going into (the announcement), I wanted to make a decision that I could completely have peace with. I’m 100% locked in. I feel great about my decision. At this point right now I feel completely secure with the Canes.”

However, the other three schools haven’t backed off their pursuit since he announced his decision.

“You know, each school has their own different reasons for why they feel I would be attracted to them,” Nix said. “Going into it, I knew everybody was going to have their own idea for why Gavin Nix should come to their program, but at the end of the day I have to (know the program) that ends up being the overall best fit, so as of right now that’s Miami. My recruitment’s not closed, but I want to be laser focused on my season. If anything does happen, it will happen (down the line), but as of right now I’m strictly locked in with Miami.”

Nix said he’s considering attending a Michigan home game this fall because he hasn’t yet visited the program. He also pointed out the Wolverines’ recent staff changes following Jim Harbaugh’s departure for the NFL and said there have been “some differences” in how last year’s staff and this year’s staff have handled his recruitment, and he doesn’t currently have plans to visit other programs.

Meanwhile, Miami has continued to recruit Nix with the same level of intensity as it did before he committed.

“The staff dang near feels like family,” Nix said. “And outside of football, the way they connect me with people, whether it’s alumni at the school or football alumni or people in the city that they know just because of the strong network, it really keeps me attracted to the school. And obviously the trajectory the team is on right now are some of the things that help keep me attracted to the program.”

    CaneSport’s Take

I generally feel pretty good about Miami’s 2025 class sticking until signing day and don’t believe there’s currently a pledge who could decommit before signing day, although things can obviously pop up or change during the season. I’m not particularly worried about Nix at the moment.
