Jordan Spieth to undergo wrist surgery, will miss rest of season

Following one FedEx Cup playoff event, Jordan Spieth is seeing his season come to an end. The star golfer is going to require surgery on his wrist.

“I’ve got to have it operated on ASAP, and then I’ll go through the process of what I’m supposed to do from there,” Spieth said .

For the past 16 months, Spieth has had issues with his left wrist that have consistently caused him issues. In particular, he’s battling a torn sheath in his left wrist that holds the tendon in place.

The injury first sprung up a week before the 2023 PGA Championship. Since then, he’s tried several different treatment methods to try and address it and avoid surgery. Unfortunately, for Spieth, it didn’t respond to those treatments and now will require him to have that surgery.

“If I don’t have a reason to try to rush back — which I don’t — I’ll probably just take it as slow as I can,” Spieth added.

The recovery time for this surgery is expected to be around three months. Assuming no setbacks, Spieth would begin his rehab six weeks into that recovery process.

Prior to injuring his wrist, Spieth had five finishes in the top six. That was at the start of the 2023 season. Since then, however, he’s struggled and only has four top-six finishes since then. He also failed to advance out of the first round of the postseason. It’s the second time that’s happened to Spieth. In 21 tournaments this year, he’s failed to make the cut eight times.

“I kept trying not to make excuses for myself because it didn’t hurt when I was swinging. But it doesn’t seem coincidental based on the amount of time, and really the results being the exact same every single week. So I’m very hopeful,” Spieth said.

“I think there’s some clarity in getting it done. There’s also some uncertainty, and so it’s a little scary. But also, if I can learn to find some patience — which I’m not very good at doing — then I think I could come back stronger.”

Interestingly, driving hasn’t been an issue for Spieth. Instead, he’s had issues with the club hitting the ground thanks to the injury.

“Anything that impacted the ground was not a good scenario for me this year,” Spieth added.

As of now, Jordan Spieth hasn’t publicly shared a date for his surgery. However, he did note that depending on how his recovery goes, he may ask for an exemption for the Hero World Challenge in early December.
