Penn State news, notes, and updates for Aug. 19 include the transfers who will impact the Big Ten title race, headlines of the day, and more. It’s time to dive into Wednesday’s top tweets and headlines about the Nittany Lions and college athletics.

Penn State tweets of the day

On3 Big Ten writer Andy Backstrom has compiled the top newcomers to various Big Ten teams who will have a say in the league’s first conference title game race since it eliminated divisions. Quarterbacks occupy the top two spots, as Ohio State’s Will Howard (who came to Columbus from Kansas State) and Oregon’s Dillion Gabriel (Oklahoma) unsurprisingly lead the way. Others who the Lions will face this year that made the cut include Buckeyes running back Quinshon Judkins (an Ole Miss transfer) and safety Caleb Downs (Alabama) in addition to USC defensive backs Kamari Ramsey (UCLA) and Akili Arnold (Oregon State).

From Penn State, receiver Julian Fleming checked in at No. 8 in the top 10 while new Nittany Lions cornerbacks AJ Harris and Jalen Kimber shared the No. 9 spot.

“Especially after KeAndre Lambert-Smith , Penn State’s top receiver from 2023, transferred to Auburn in the spring, there’s an onus on Fleming to deliver in the final year of his college career,” Backstrom writes.

He adds the following on Harris and Kimber:

“Harris was the No. 3 corner in the 2023 class, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, but he played only 89 defensive snaps in his lone year with Georgia. Kimber, who actually started his career at Georgia as well, was an everyday starter for the Gators last year and allowed 21 receptions on 36 targets for 389 yards and three scores, per PFF.”

    Quote of the day

“I think their biggest problem is going to be their offensive line. Have to rebuild the offensive line again. They have good skill set on offense and on defense. They have some pass rushers, [ Abdul Carter ]’s a good player. There are some good players there, but they’re just going to have to get that offensive line up to par fast. And if that happens, then they’ll be successful. And inevitably, you know, they’re always going to be judged by one or two games on their schedule. I mean, it’s always, traditionally been Ohio State and Michigan. They won’t have that all the time. It’ll be in a cycle.”
