Akedran Crumel visited NC State football twice in the spring, once for practice and again for the Apr. 6 scrimmage, before returning this summer for the Alpha Wolf Showcase. The local sophomore out of Clayton (N.C.) High already holds an offer from the Pack.

NC State extended an offer to the 6-2, 155-pound cornerback May 16. The class of 2027 recruit attends high school less than a half hour away from the Wolfpack’s campus, and the program has his attention early.

He stopped by for Alpha Wolf as one of the few rising sophomores in attendance that day. Crumel enjoyed the trip.

“It was great,” Crumel said. “It was a real fun day. We had a pool day, we went to go eat, did some little work on the field and then just watched film in the room and all that.”

Pack cornerbacks coach Brian Mitchell is his primary recruiter. He broke down tape with the NC State assistant during this visit and said that, along with the trip to the University Club pool, were the highlights of the day in Raleigh. Crumel appreciated how friendly everyone was.

Even though the Wolfpack staff cannot reach out directly to the sophomore yet, he has been around campus enough to take away an overall positive impression of Mitchell so far.

“He’s a real chill guy, laid back,” Crumel said. “He can be funny sometimes.”

Crumel also holds offers from South Carolina, Kentucky, West Virginia and others. He quickly emerged as a coveted prospect in the 2027 class this year, and NC State stands right in the middle of his recruitment.

The sophomore said the Wolfpack likes his length, his ability to run and his overall skill set that allows him to play multiple coverages. Crumel noticed that there weren’t many other sophomores on campus with him earlier this summer, which resonated with the cornerback.

“It’s great,” Crumel said. “Knowing that I was one of the only ‘27s there, knowing that I’ve got an eye on me early in my career, it’s a great thing.”

He’s still in the early stages of his recruitment, but the class of 2027 prospect knows what he’s looking for. During his unofficial visits, Crumel wants to learn the techniques each staff teaches to its defensive backs, while also taking a look at the campus life around the different schools.

While his offer list could expand to include schools from coast to coast over the next couple of years, staying close to home intrigues the cornerback.

“Yeah, it’s something I could be interested in because I want my family to come to my games, but I want to be super close to them,” Crumel said.

Crumel said he might visit with the Pack later this fall for the program’s showdown with Tennessee in Charlotte at Bank of America Stadium.

The defensive back worked on his press coverage and vocal leadership this offseason and kicks off his sophomore season with Clayton Friday. He holds high expectations for the team.

“We should go undefeated this season,” Crumel said.
