Penn State updates for Aug. 21 include the top takeaways and things we learned from the Nittany Lions’ latest media availability. It’s time to dive into Wednesday’s top tweets and headlines about head coach James Franklin’s team and college athletics.

Penn State tweets of the day

Penn State coach James Franklin and numerous members of his program met with reporters on Tuesday night in State College. From a straight news perspective, the 11th-year leader of the Nittany Lions revealed that second-year running back Cam Wallace is in the lead for the No. 3 job at that position behind Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen . It is not shocking news, but Wallace dealt with some health issues during some of preseason camp, which made his earning the job a question mark until now. In other news, Harrison “Trey” Wallace III and Liam Clifford continue to lead the receivers room. There is no decision yet on who the starting placement kicker will be. And, second-year lineman J’ven Williams is getting some guard work during camp as the Lions continue to try and dial in their starters and depth across all five spots up front.

Penn State is now finished with preseason camp and is rolling into West Virginia prep starting today. Kickoff is set for Noon ET on Aug. 31 in Morgantown.

    Quote of the day

“There comes a point where you just need to play somebody. It’s hard to really determine; you see good things on tape, you have some concerns, some areas that you need to work on, but you’re going against the same people every single day. So it’s hard to really judge until you play somebody else. But in terms of where we’re at, and in terms of improvement, I’m comfortable with where we’re at, I think there’s some areas that we’ve taken some significant steps in. I think it’s much more competitive right now between the offense and the defense, and I think all three coordinators have done a phenomenal job as well as some of the new players.

“So I think we’re at a good place. I don’t know if there’s kind of an area that I would say right now that is overly concerning. It’s hard to determine until you play somebody else. It’s hard to totally evaluate your roster until you play somebody.”
