Kevin Harvick gives visceral reaction to Corey LaJoie flipping at Michigan

Corey LaJoie had an unpleasant experience on Lap 136 of Monday’s race at Michigan, flipping and taking a ride on his roof down the backstretch .

Why his car lifted into the air so easily is the question on Kevin Harvick’s mind. After all, it was the slightest of contact with Noah Gragson while the two were jockeying for position inside the top-20 which sent his No. 7 Chevrolet flying. Harvick expressed his concern with the incident on his “ Happy Hour ” podcast Tuesday, saying “there’s just no reason those racecars should turn over like that.”

“I was really shocked how easily it just flipped over on its own,” Harvick said. “I think that is going to be a high concern for all the drivers, all the technical guys. The teams for as easy as that car turned over. There’s just no reason those racecars should turn over like that when they’re all by themselves. We’ve seen that happen several times when somebody’s pushing on the left side door and helps them get lifted off. But man, that car just lifted off all on its own.”

LaJoie finished P32, now the eighth time he has finished 32nd or worse this season. It’s been a disaster of a campaign for LaJoie, yes, but the best news to come out of all this is that he remarkably came out unscathed from the accident.

Corey LaJoie explains what he was thinking as he flipped at Michigan

LaJoie recounted his experience inside the car as it all went down during Tuesday’s “ Stacking Pennies ” podcast. As LaJoie went for the pass on the inside, next thing he knew, he was having a Ricky Bobby “I’m flying through the air” moment.

“So, I hit him, and I started spinning out, I’m like damnit. Just lock it down, try to keep this thing going,” LaJoie said . “I’ll drive around with flats on, and we’ll put tires on it, and we’ll still try. I was thinking about that all in the span of it getting sideways. Then it picked up and I’m like, ‘Oh sh*t, I’m flying through the air.’”

LaJoie’s car will now go back to the R&D Center in Concord, North Carolina, to be inspected. As you could imagine, NASCAR wants to take a deeper look at how the Next Gen car took flight so easily. Harvick, who drove in the Next Gen car for two seasons, used the word “finicky” to describe the cars.

“We’ve seen these cars flip over a couple times,” Harvick said. “We saw [Ryan] Preece at Daytona. … These cars are really finicky whether it be a situation like this where they just have these moments where you’re like, ‘Woah, why did that happen?’ And I think there’s still some things about the car that we don’t really understand.”
