Michigan Wolverines football named four captains for the 2024 season. Senior running back Donovan Edwards , senior tight end / fullback Max Bredeson , senior safety Rod Moore and graduate safety Makari Paige were all selected by their teammates to lead the team.

Moore is recovering from a knee injury suffered this spring and subsequent surgery he underwent in April, while the others are expected to play major roles for the defending national champion Michigan Wolverines this fall.

In addition, two alternate captains — senior running back Kalel Mullings and senior EDGE Josaiah Stewart — were also chosen.

Edwards, a homegrown product from West Bloomfield, Mich., was the MVP of the Big Ten championship game in 2022. He has four of the biggest runs in program history — 75- and 85-yard scores at Ohio State in 2022 and two 40-plus yard scoring dashes against Washington in the national championship game this past January.

Edwards has appeared in 38 career games with four starts. He rushed 119 times for 497 yards and 5 touchdowns, adding 30 catches for 249 yards last season. He and Mullings are projected to be the top two running backs for Michigan this season.

Bredeson, meanwhile, is a highly valued offensive player, mostly for his blocking from the fullback, H-back and tight end positions. He appeared in all 15 games with three starts last season, catching 2 passes for 19 yards.

The 6-foot-2, 240-pounder is the brother of former Michigan two-time captain (2018-19) and offensive lineman Ben Bredeson , who’s now on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Moore was a third-team All-Big Ten selection in 2023, appearing in 12 games with 11 starts. He logged 38 tackles, including 1 for loss, and 2 interceptions. He broke up 5 passes, in addition.

A Clayton, Ohio, native, Moore was tied for the team’s lead in tackles in a win over Ohio State as a freshman, played a key role in a win over the Buckeyes as a sophomore and sealed the victory over the arch rival as a junior with an interception last season.

Paige, like Edwards, also hails from West Bloomfield (Mich.) High and has been a mainstay in Michigan’s defensive backfield over the last four-plus seasons. He started 13 games a year ago, registering 41 tackles with 2 pass breakups and 1 fumble recovery.

All four, plus the two alternates, have stepped up as leaders this offseason. Edwards has said he’s been challenging his teammates during workouts and practices, and that he even wants younger players to push the veterans, with a desire for every voice to be heard. Bredeson is one of the hardest working players on the team who’s been more vocal this year. Moore has taken on a coach-like role since his injury. Paige has almost as much experience as anyone on Michigan’s team, with over 1,150 defensive snaps played.
