Mike Norvell highlights biggest challenge for Florida State: ‘Some of it’s just the unknown’

As Florida State heads into the 2024 season, the challenge will be picking up the pieces after a historic College Football Playoff snub to end the 2023 campaign. But coach Mike Norvell thinks there’s another challenge.

He’s got a brand new team and that means, to some degree, he doesn’t exactly know what he’s working with right now.

“Some of it’s just the unknown,” Mike Norvell said on ESPN’s College GameDay on Saturday from Dublin, Ireland. “We have guys that are in new roles, new opportunities. I mean I love the experience that we have, I mean I love the talent, the size, the speed, the athletic ability that our guys possess. But now it comes down to the moment of truth.”

Florida State will open the season on Saturday with a game against Georgia Tech , a game that begins in just mere hours. It’ll be a test.

A test for new quarterback DJ Uiagalelei . A test for a revamped receiving corps. A rebuild defensive line. A reshuffled secondary.

“When gameday starts are we going to be able to rely on the discipline, the details, all of the training and everything we’ve done up to this point and go put it on display?” Mike Norvell wondered. “But I have a lot of confidence in this team. They’ve worked at a really high level and I’m excited to watch them play today.”

That playoff snub, of course, is something that Florida State will try to put behind it. It won’t be easy.

Already Florida State fans are heartily booing Kirk Herbstreit on the set of GameDay, remembering his take on the snub a year ago. Norvell wants his team to move on, to some extent.

“Obviously I mean this is a new year, it’s a new opportunity,” Mike Norvell said. “Obviously you grow from every experience. Every experience you’re willing to go through, you’re willing to pour your heart into it, you’re willing to work through the highs and the lows. I mean it gets an opportunity to show your identity, what’s at the core of you.”

If Florida State has truly learned and grown since the snub last winter, the team will have used it as motivation to continue improving. And Mike Norvell said that’s exactly what has happened.

“Since January, since we’ve gotten back our team has truly embraced the work,” he said. “All the things we’ve thrown at them, all the things we’ve put in front of them, they’ve kept such a wonderful mindset, they’ve made the investments, they’ve come together as a wonderful team and brotherhood since that point. This is what you do it for. You do it to be on a stage like this today to kick off the college football season and for the world to get a glimpse of what this Seminole football team’s going to be.”
