Trackhouse Racing will make an announcement at 5 p.m. ET today about its Cup Series lineup for the 2025 season, with expectations that Shane van Gisbergen will be tapped for a spot.

Trackhouse announced Friday that it will part ways with Zane Smith , the driver of the No. 71 car this season.

That news came as a mild surprise, though Smith has struggled so far this season in the Cup Series. He is, however, coming off a seventh-place finish in the FireKeepers Casino 400 at Michigan.

His best performance of the year was in Nashville at the Ally 400, where he finished second behind Joey Logano .

But Smith currently ranks just 33rd in the NASCAR Cup Series standings, checking in with 292 overall points. He has one top five finish and two top 10 finishes, while he has four DNFs and has led just three laps all season.

“Trackhouse Racing and Zane Smith have mutually agreed to separate at the conclusion of the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series season, allowing the 25-year-old former NASCAR Truck Series champion to immediately accept other opportunities,” the statement from Trackhouse on Friday night read. “Smith drives the No. 71 Spire Motorsports Chevrolet in an alliance with Trackhouse Racing and will continue for the remainder of this season.”

Should Shane van Gisbergen be the new driver for Trackhouse Racing’s Cup Series team it will be a big one.

During his career, van Gisbergen has one NASCAR Cup Series win and two top 10 finishes. He won the 2023 Grant Park 220 in Chicago.

Van Gisbergen, a road course expert, has been excellent this season in the Xfinity Series. He has racked up three wins and five top five finishes. He’s also been competitive in a couple Cup Series races during the year, notably competing at Chicago.
