The Florida State Seminoles were held to just 21 points in the team’s upset loss to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets , which led head coach Mike Norvell to call for the offense and quarterback DJ Uiagalelei to be more explosive.

Norvell explained following the game that while Uiagalelei did some things that he liked, there were also opportunities that the team needs to grow from moving forward.

“I thought DJ did some good things,” Mike Norvell said . “I thought that was a really great job there in that fourth quarter drive. Had some fourth-down calls, had some tougher situations, and I thought he delivered that moment. There’s a couple of drives in the third quarter, there’s some opportunities that we’re going to be able to grow from and at the end of the day we have to be more explosive.”

Florida State ended the game with 291 total yards on 58 plays. That amounts to 5.0 yards per play for the game. It’s a number that came up notably short compared to Georgia Tech’s 6.5 yards per play for the game.

For his own part, DJ Uiagalelei finished the game having completed 19 of 27 passes for 193 yards. He also rushed for seven yards in six carries, including sack yardage. However, consistently passing downfield was a struggle until the final drive of the game when he was able to take Florida State downfield for a game-tying touchdown.

“And that’s not just going to one player. That’s going to all of us. It’s going to myself, obviously, our coaches, you know, players, everybody involved because we got to have that explosive element with a good group. We’ve got explosive players. Obviously, we’ll have to continue to work and go get better at that,” Norvell said.

“DJ did some really good things, but then obviously some things that we need to improve on.”

Florida State’s offense is going to have just over a week to bounce back. The Seminoles are back in action on Monday, September 2nd when Florida State plays another ACC game against the Boston College Eagles .

Mike Norvell considers why Florida State couldn’t sustain run game after first drive

Florida State struggled to create explosive plays in the passing game. Unfortunately, the Seminoles also had issues sustaining the running game after the first drive, which Mike Norvell spoke about following the game.

“We had a couple of explosive runs there in that first drive. Obviously, we were not able to replicate that as the game went on. They did a good job with some of the adjustments they made.” Norvell said .

“For us, there are some of the plays were the smallest of margins that are the difference in big, explosive plays. That’s where we get to go to work and have to be better. So, some of that we’ll get a chance to watch and see and continue to reevaluate. That’s how I saw it.”
