The Florida State Seminoles and head coach Mike Norvell dropped a close game to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in Dublin, Ireland to start the season. A big piece of why the Seminoles were upset in the season opener came back to Florida State’s inability to create and maintain momentum.

After the game, Norvell addressed those struggles with momentum in the game, crediting Georgia Tech while admitting that Florida State needs to be better at capitalizing on its own opportunities.

“We’re two experienced teams,” Mike Norvell said . “Obviously, they’ve got a lot of experience returning within their offense. So, when we had a good drive, we had a good play, they came out and did what a good offense should do. Obviously, there’s a lot of things that we’ve got to do to be able to throw them off of their rhythm and make them uncomfortable.”

Florida State opened the game with a long touchdown drive and a two-point conversion. Immediately, Georgia Tech responded with its own touchdown drive. Even in the final two drives of the game, the Seminoles were able to go down to score and tie the game while the Yellow Jackets quickly responded with its own drive to set up the game-winning kick.

“You know, we’re on offense here, there’s some third-down opportunities that we’ve got to capitalize on, and, like I said, it starts with me and making sure that I’m putting our guys in the best position to be successful,” Norvell said. “But that’s part of this game, and I knew coming into this game it was a team that was very capable. When you see the group that they were returning. I’ve got respect for their defensive coordinator. Obviously, competed against him last year.”

Throughout the game, Florida State struggled to string drives together and on multiple drives had to settle for long field goal attempts. Meanwhile, when Georgia Tech drove the ball, it was often in long drives that slowed the game down.

“We knew that there was going to be some things that they could present that would be challenging, but it just puts that much more emphasis on capitalizing on the opportunities that you get. I think we had maybe seven, possibly eight drives in the game, we scored on four of them but, ultimately, two times we’re settling for field goals, and you got to get the ball in the endzone, and they did a good job to get stops in those moments. We had one fourth down that we were aggressive to get and, you know, came up just short of it. It was a good call, good play by their corner in getting the stop,” Norvell said.

“Those are all things that are the difference.”

It was a frustrating start to the season for Mike Norvell and Florida State. Now, the Seminoles need to bounce back quickly and find a way to gain momentum going into the rest of the season.
