The NCAA delivered its Notice of Allegations to Michigan regarding the Connor Stalions sign-stealing scandal. That came just days before Netflix was set to release its documentary on the scandal.

On3’s Andy Staples and Jesse Simonton opened up about the documentary and what they expect to see from it during a discussion on Andy Staples On3 .

“I love that the NOA gets dropped on them two days before the Connor Stalions documentary drops on Netflix,” Staples said .

In his initial reaction to the documentary, Simonton shared that he’s a bit skeptical about the end product of this documentary given some of the recent sports documentaries that Netflix has produced.

“What are our thoughts on that? Because I kind of think that this documentary is gonna be a nothing burger. Maybe I’m gonna be wrong. The way the Florida one played out last year, I’m just skeptical, but it will be hilarious if it actually, a, is good and, b, there’s like oh, Connor Stalions is on camera and he’s saying, ‘Hell yeah, it was me at Central Michigan here on the sidelines.’ You know? If he’s like puffing his chest out that would be classic. I’m just skeptical,” Simonton said.

“Obviously, it drops on Tuesday. The timing of this is certainly eye-opening. Michigan fans continue to be apoplectic that this is even a storyline, but, hey, college football is all about rivals just continuing to throw mud at rivals.”

The major issue of the sign-stealing scandal at Michigan is that the team was using advanced scouting to steal the signs. That was how Stalions was involved as he allegedly led the effort, helping to organize and even supposedly sneaking onto the Central Michigan sideline.

“The draft copy that ESPN obtained a few weeks ago — it seems to be fairly similar to the one that landed… it’s not all Connor Stalions. There’s 11 allegations in it. Two of them involve Connor Stalions. Then everything else is recruiting stuff and other things. I don’t know how this is gonna shake out and we won’t know for a while. But the Connor Stalions documentary, this series, this UNTOLD series, it’s been a lot of if you actually follow the sport it’s stuff you already knew…if you didn’t know anything about it, which is most of the audience they’re trying to reach, you’re like, ‘Wow, what a story’ and I think that’s what’s gonna happen here,” Staples said.

“Now, everybody who’s involved with this has signed an NDA and they’ve not really made it available to see early. So, all you’ve got are these little whispers. The only juicy whisper I heard, and I’m not sure if I believe this, is that he’s gonna name people who are doing the same thing for other programs.”

The Netflix documentary on Stalions and Michigan is part of the UNTOLD series by Netflix. It’s a serious that Simonton believes could do a better job of actually telling the untold stories.

“I’m with you, the Florida one in particular, it should have been redubbed “ TOLD: The Story That You’ve Heard Before .” Because they could have read all your news clippings as a beat writer…the [Johnny] Manziel one was pretty good, but I’m with you. I’m skeptical.”

Even with those criticisms of the series, Staples still has things to be excited about in it. Particularly, hearing from Connor Stalions himself.

“I do want to see it because I’ve only heard him talk a couple of times,” Staples said. “We’ve read so much about this guy but there’s so little available video, interview footage, like I just want to get a sense of the person. So, that part, I’m kind of interested in seeing.”

Connor Stalions became a major character in the scandal largely because of his role in it. However, his personality started to come to light at times, making him seem like even more of an interesting person. How that shines through could be interesting.

“That and how transparent is he about…his manifesto and this whole deal that he did from years ago wrote this huge thing about how he wanted to ultimately become the head coach at Michigan,” Simonton said. “I would be fascinated to hear him talk about that and if he actually does lean in.”

In the end, Michigan won the national championship the year of the Stalions scandal. Now, it’s a question about what comes out in either the NCAA investigation or things like the Netflix documentary.

“I think he’s gonna say, ‘I was a lone wolf. I didn’t tell the coaches anything I was doing.’ I don’t think he’s gonna do anything to hurt Michigan, at least not intentionally…if they left it in that means they can [probably] prove it’s true. Because if he just starts naming people and I’m whatever production company works for Netflix, I’m not putting that in the thing unless we know that’s true because I’m gonna get sued,” Staples said.

“So, we’ll find out exactly how that goes but if he can say that everybody else was doing this, which is something Michigan fans have been saying all along, it doesn’t matter because you got caught and being the one who is dumb enough to get caught is still a thing, but its definitely interesting and juicy.”

Netflix’s documentary UNTOLD: Sign Stealer will premiere on Tuesday, August 27th.
