Dan Lanning not expecting Dave Iuli, Jahlil Florence to play vs. Idaho

The Oregon Ducks are prepping for a game against the Idaho Vandals to open the season. That’s a game that head coach Dan Lanning knows he will likely be shorthanded for.

As he explained at the start of the week, Lanning isn’t expecting Dave Iuli or Jahlil Florence to play in the game against Idaho. However, another player who has been dealing with injuries, Gary Bryant Jr , could be available for the game.

“I don’t think Jahlil or Dave will be available,” Dan Lanning said . “Gary I think could be available.”

Gary Bryant Jr. is in his second season with Oregon after transferring into the program from USC. After initially going to USC in 2020, he now has plenty of experience at the college level and is expected to become a key weapon on the Ducks offense moving forward. He seemed to be dealing with an injury in camp after missing practice following a scrimmage.

Last season, Bryant played in 14 games and made 12 starts. He had 30 receptions for 442 yards and four touchdowns.

For his part, offensive lineman Dave Iuli is entering his third season with Oregon and there was some thought he could make his way into the starting lineup. However, a broken foot in the Spring has kept him out.

Defensive back Jahlil Florence started nine games last season before suffering an injury late in the year. That ended his 2023 season early and he hasn’t been a full participant in practice at all this offseason. He had 27 total tackles, including two tackles for a loss and a sack. He also had an interception and a pass defended.

Dan Lanning unfazed by preseason hype for Oregon

There is a lot of excitement surrounding Oregon entering the season. However, Dan Lanning has said that he’s unfazed by the preseason hype.

“You said it, testament to a lot of things that don’t matter, right? Got to go play the games on Saturday, so try to ignore the outside noise,” Lanning said .

Oregon is ranked third in the Preseason AP Top 25 poll . Expectations are clearly high. However, Dan Lanning and the Ducks do have questions to answer, like if they were able to properly replace Bo Nix and how to program transitions into the Big Ten.
