Deion Sanders and the Colorado Buffaloes made waves last week, when the program informed The Denver Post that they’ll no longer allow questions from columnist Sean Keeler .

The athletic department provided examples of Keeler’s personal attacks on Sanders and Colorado, citing his use of phrases such as “false prophet,” “Deposition Deion,” “Planet Prime,” “Bruce Lee of B.S.,” “the Deion Kool-Aid” and “circus.”.

The decision has drawn immense backlash from a myriad of people in the football world. On the latest episode of The Triple Option with Rob Stone and Mark Ingram , former Florida and Ohio State coach Urban Meyer gave his thoughts on the matter.

“I’ve known Deion a long time, and he says things that most people want to say,” Meyer started . “I’ve never seen a guy ban, you know, guys from asking questions or all that. There’s been times all of us wanted to. I think there’s a two sided responsibility there.

“One is the coach probably can’t, you know, he’ll catch a lot of heat for not allowing people to ask questions. But then I do believe journalists have a — and I use that term sometimes, you know, journalist, that you know, when there’s personal attacks or just constant, you know, antagonism, because there are guys out there,  that’s how they make a living. You know, they don’t really report, but they’re, you know, it’s almost a shock jock, where they antagonize constantly. So I get it, you know, and I can see exactly where he’s coming from, but I know he threw himself out there.

“He’s going to get, I’m sure there’s a lot of media now, they’re going to just start swarming him. … There’s a certain profile of, once again, I use that term journalist, that they’re not covering your team. You know, they’re not covering the player, the coach, the university, the team. They’re simply, that’s how they, you know, they get hired to go just be an antagonist for people, and they’re out there.”

While Meyer believes both Sanders and Keeler share some of the blame, he commended Sanders for his approach to the situation, grilling the columnist for his takes on Colorado.

“You know, he did say something though, instead of firing back, I thought that was really, actually — ‘I want to know why. What’s your problem? Why would you, you know, call, whether it be the coach or players names?’ You know, to me, there’s accountability on both sides of this deal,” Meyer added .

“Yes, the head coach and the team have to be available for the media, and I think that’s probably right. But then also, why? I like that.”

Alas, Deion Sanders versus the media will likely be a story the college football world follows throughout the season, and it’ll be fascinating to see how it progresses over the course of the 2024 campaign.
