Florida State entered the season with not just hopes of repeating as ACC Champions, but making it to the expanded 12-team College Football Playoff with a chance at playing for a national championship. Postseason hopes that took a brutal hit to start off the season following a loss to Georgia Tech in Week 0 across the pond in Dublin, Ireland.

An upset loss to a conference opponent is a tough way to start the season, as the Seminoles now essentially face a must win game versus another conference opponent in Week 1 against Boston College .

But college football analyst Paul Finebaum believes that Florida State’s College Football Playoff chances are now non existent. Asked on ESPN’s Get Up Wednesday morning if he thinks the Seminoles can still make the CFP by host Mike Greenberg.

“I do not, listen their schedule is too daunting Greeny,” Finebaum said. “I mean they have all the big cats in the ACC. There’s some really good schools like Miami , they have Notre Dame , they have Clemson . It’s too much for them.”

There’s no question that Florida State’s schedule isn’t getting much easier after being double-digit favorites among oddsmakers in Week 0. But after having 10 players selected in this year’s NFL Draft following their undefeated season last year, Finebaum also simply thinks the Seminoles have taken a step back.

“I mean this is just not last year’s team which was which was supreme and elite, they’re missing too much,” Finebaum said. “And I realize you can improve a lot from one game to the next, but not enough for them to be a contender.”

Week 1 and Week 0 of the college football season oftentimes comes with overreactions, as all eyes will now be on the Seminoles to see if their season opening loss will be an outlier or their standard this season.

There’s definitely still a scenario where Florida State can improve throughout the season, run the table, and return to the ACC title and College Football Playoff conversation with a flawless remainder of the regular season. But there’s no question that their Week 0 loss makes things more challenging for the Seminoles in terms of performance and pressure.

FSU will look to get back on track in their home opener on Monday at Doak Campbell Stadium when they host Boston College at 7:30 p.m. ET in a matchup airing on ESPN.
