Mike Wright named Northwestern starting QB

Former Vanderbilt and Mississippi State quarterback Mike Wright was named the starter for Northwestern , On3’s Pete Nakos confirmed.

This is now the third school of his career where he was named starting quarterback. He’ll make his debut against Miami (Ohio) Saturday.

Wright beat out sophomore Jack Lausch during the team’s training camp this summer. Head coach David Braun brought in new OC Zach Lujan and the pair were intrigued by Wright’s skillset.

Over the course of his career, Wright started 14 games under center. He has 2,520 yards, 24 touchdowns, 14 interceptions and a 55.5% completion percentage. Wright also has 1,229 yards rushing and 10 touchdowns on the ground.

As a member of the Class of 2020, Wright was a three-star recruit out of Atlanta (Ga.) Woodward Academy, according to the On3 Industry Ranking , a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He was the No. 66 overall prospect in the state, the No. 39 quarterback in the class and the No. 574 overall prospect in the class.

Lujan spoke with On3’s Pete Nakos in the summer about identifying Wright in the transfer portal.

“Well, first off, the unique thing about transfer recruiting is trying to build a relationship and gain all the information in condensed windows,” Lujan said. “So it’s a lot of phone calls to try to paint a picture on who somebody is and in the same breath, get to know somebody directly.

“I don’t remember the exact timeline. It might have been a day or two beforehand he put out that he was going in. His first day in the portal, I shot him a message on Twitter and got on the phone with him later that night. Mike had been recruited by Northwestern in high school. It really came down to Northwestern and Vanderbilt in high school. So he had pretty extensive knowledge of the institution and who we are from that standpoint.”
