The Sooners got off on the right foot with a 51-3 win over Temple while the Cougars lost 27-7 to UNLV at home. Safe to say, Oklahoma looks like a big favorite over Houston in Norman.

If Oklahoma is to handle Houston next week, it might be because of defensive coordinator Zac Alley . He had full control of the defense against Temple.

“He’s been the best defensive coordinator in the country for 20-plus years, so he just sees the game slow for him,” Alley said of head coach Brent Venables, via SoonerScoop .

“He can see it all before it happens, so just the opportunity to have him on the headset and talking to me the whole time, just, ‘Hey, this is what I’m thinking. This is where we are.’ That’s always a benefit, no doubt about it. Every now and then, he’ll be like, ‘That was a good call,’ and I’ll always feel good about that. So, that means that he agrees. It was good. I really enjoyed it.”

The offense was pretty solid too. New quarterback Jackson Arnold , a much heralded recruit, finished the game 17-of-25 passing for 141 yards and four touchdowns.

The run game combined for 220 yards on the ground, spread out between Arnold and myriad running backs, including Taylor Tatum who had 69 yards and a score.

Oklahoma brings a lot of juice into next week and Houston will certainly have its hands full.

Oklahoma also gets running backs coach DeMarco Murray back on the sideline after he was suspended for one game for recruiting violations.

“I won’t really comment on whether or not this is the week or not but in situations like these, despite the nuances and the particulars, we have to take responsibility and move on and that’s exactly what we’re doing,” Venables said.
