As expected, Georgia did not need star defensive lineman Mykel Williams for their home opener on Saturday to secure a dominant 48-3 win against Tennessee Tech . But there’s no question that the Bulldogs would love for him to return from his Grade 2 ankle sprain for the team’s first SEC game of the year when they face Kentucky in Lexington.

Head coach Kirby Smart was asked about the injury status of Williams following Saturday’s win and if he’ll rejoin the Georgia defense next weekend at Kroger Field.

“He’s hurt, he’s got an ankle so he couldn’t go today,” Smart said. “I don’t know what he’ll be able to do, I’m sure we’ll find out on Wednesday.”

After recording two tackles for loss and leading Georgia with three QB pressures against Clemson in Week 1, Tigers’ running back Phil Mafah illegally blocked Williams below the waist in the third quarter. Resulting in his left ankle sprain and Williams not returning in the game for the Bulldogs impressive 34-3 win to start the season.

The injury had Williams listed as questionable heading into Week 2, unlikely to play particularly given Georgia’s opponent. And even though ESPN college football insider Pete Thamel reported last week that he expects to see Williams in Week 3 against Kentucky, Smart isn’t as certain.

“I don’t know if we’ll get him back, but we’ve got him in a Game Ready, got him getting rehab, got him working getting treatment all day Friday, all day Saturday, all day tomorrow,” Smart said.

It’s clear that Williams will do all of the necessary rehab to return to the field as fast as possible. Representing a major disruptive force on Georgia’s defensive line at 6-foot-5, 265 pounds and a top prospect for the 2025 NFL Draft. Named a First Team Freshman All-America by The Athletic after racking up 4.5 sacks and 6.5 tackles for loss in 2022 and replicating those same numbers last season to earn an All-SEC Second Team selection.

Plenty of Georgia’s defensive linemen took the field on Saturday in a defensive performance that yielded three sacks and 10 tackles for loss for the Bulldogs’ defense. But there’s no question that the return of Williams would only make the top team in the country even more dangerous this season.
