Joel Klatt ranks top 10 teams in college football after Week 2

Week 2 of the college football season was filled with upsets and marquee matchups. When everything shook out, making sense of it all could be a bit of a challenge. Luckily, analyst Joel Klatt shared his top 10 teams in college football after Week 2 to help make sort things out.

Ranking teams is difficult and Klatt made the unique decision of allowing teams to be tied in his rankings. Immediately, he decided to include a three-way tie at the top of the sport among those three teams, Georgia, Texas, and Ohio State, who most agree are the best in college football. In total, Klatt included one Big 12 school, one ACC school, five SEC schools, and three Big Ten schools.

With all that in mind, here’s a look at Joel Klatt’s list of the top 10 teams in college football through Week 2 of the season:

Tie-1. Georgia Bulldogs (2-0)

The Georgia Bulldogs came into the season as one of the favorites to win the SEC and make a deep run in the College Football Playoff . Now, through two weeks, the Bulldogs have given no reason to doubt that they’re capable of doing that, which is reflected in where Joel Klatt lists them here as one of the best teams in the country.

Georgia’s dominant Week 1 win looks better now that Clemson has bounced back and won a big game of its own. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs took care of business against an overmatched opponent in Week 2. From here, the schedule is going to get difficult and the Bulldogs will be tested multiple times in SEC play this season. For now, though, they’re among the best in college football.

Tie-1. Ohio State Buckeyes (2-0)

Klatt made the decision to have three teams tied for first on his list. That includes the Ohio State Buckeyes, who came into the season expecting to make their own deep run toward a potential national championship. At the same time, with wins over a pair of MAC schools, the Buckeyes haven’t truly been tested yet.

The Buckeyes continue their non-conference slate in Week 3 with a game against the Marshall Thundering Herd . After that, Ohio State will move on to Big Ten play. There, the Buckeyes will get tested throughout the season with four games against teams who are currently ranked. During that stretch, Ohio State will reveal just how good they are this season.

Tie-1. Texas Longhorns (2-0)

The Texas Longhorns earned one of the marquee wins of the week, going into Ann Arbor and beating the Michigan Wolverines . More than that, the Longhorns were dominant in the win. So, it’s going to be difficult for anyone to ignore the Longhorns this season.

For his part, Klatt has Texas as one of the three teams tied for first in the country. That win over Michigan, likely the best between all three of those teams, is a big part of why Klatt has the Longhorns ranked so highly. Of course, as the season goes on, there will be plenty of chances to earn other big wins, including against the Georgia Bulldogs when the two sides meet in October.

4. Ole Miss Rebels (2-0)

Through two games, Ole Miss has played a relatively easy schedule. At the same time, it’s hard to deny how much success head coach Lane Kiffin has seen his team have so far this season. So far, Ole Miss has outscored its opponents 128-3. Regardless of who that’s against, it’s impressive.

Ole Miss is going to be playing a power conference team in Week 3 when the Rebels take a road trip to Wake Forest . It’s a chance to continue to play at that high level against a step-up in competition for Ole Miss. It’s also an opportunity to continue to prove that the team is worthy of the rankings that people like Klatt are currently giving them.

5. Miami Hurricanes (2-0)

In Week 1, the Miami Hurricanes had a game in the spotlight and they dominated the Florida Gators in the process. Week 2, Miami went a little more under the radar, having hosted Florida A&M . Miami took care of business in the game too, winning 56-9.

Next up for Miami is a game against Ball State . That will be another opportunity to get a win, build confidence, and make sure the team is playing as well together as it possibly can to open the season. From there, the expectations will be high. Many people even expect Miami to win the ACC and earn a first-round bye in the College Football Playoff.

6. Tennessee Volunteers (2-0)

The Tennessee Volunteers looked great against an FCS opponent in Week 1. They then followed that up with a win over NC State at a neutral site. The Wolfpack, who were ranked at the time, were never competitive in the game. With that, Klatt has the Volunteers ranked extremely highly through two games.

Tennessee ended up beating NC State 51-10. The defense was incredibly impressive, forcing three turnovers and only allowing 143 total yards. Even the touchdown was a defensive score for NC State, meaning the Volunteers’ defense didn’t give it up. If the defense can keep playing at that level, the Volunteers are a real threat in the SEC.

7. USC Trojans (2-0)

There is a chance that USC has figured out the defensive side of the ball. After years of that unit holding head coach Lincoln Riley ‘s teams back, having a talented defense is going to make the Trojans a real threat in the Big Ten. With the defense pitching a shutout against Utah State in Week 2, it’s easy to get excited about that unit.

For now, though, Klatt has USC in his number seven spot. That ranking comes after the Trojans earned a marquee win in Week 1 and a dominant win in Week 2. Next week, USC has a bye week. The Trojans will use that to prepare for another marquee game, this time against the Michigan Wolverines.

8. Alabama Crimson Tide (2-0)

The final score of Alabama’s win over USF was 42-16. However, that really doesn’t explain how close the game was throughout. At one point in the fourth quarter, down 21-13, USF settled for a field goal inside the 10-yard line. It was after that point that the Crimson Tide quickly blew the game open to make the final score more respectable.

Now 2-0, Alabama is clearly one of the most talented teams in the country. At the same time, there do seem to be some growing pains under new head coach Kalen DeBoer , and that likely accounts for being ranked eighth by Joel Klatt.

9. Penn State Nittany Lions (2-0)

The Penn State Nittany Lions got a scare in Week 2. Bowling Green came into Happy Valley and led at halftime. However, the Penn State defense made adjustments and suffocated Bowling Green in the second half, helping the Nittany Lions to find a way to win by a touchdown. Still, it was a close call.

Now, Penn State has a bye week to hit the reset button. After that, the Nittany Lions host Kent State in a game they’ll look to do better in than they did in Week 2. Still, for the time being, Klatt still thinks the Nittany Lions are one of the best in the country.

10. Utah Utes (2-0)

The Utah Utes played their first Big 12 conference game on Saturday, handling Baylor with relative ease. However, quarterback Cam Rising left the game with an apparent hand injury. He didn’t return and Utah’s success this season will likely depend on his ability to return from that injury as quickly as possible.

Next week, Utah plays a rivalry game against Utah State. It’s a game the Utes will be favored to win. At the same time, Rising’s health is going to remain a concern. In particular, Utah will look to get him back before needing to play another Big 12 game.

There is still plenty of time this college football season for these rankings to get shaken up. Someone ranked will likely fall out and someone unranked will likely quickly rise to these types of rankings. For now, though, Klatt has shared a snapshot of where everyone stands at the top of college football.
