Kentucky hosts No. 1 Georgia in a matchup where the Wildcats head into Saturday as massive underdogs.

The Wildcats haven’t beated a No. 1-ranked team in Lexington since they downed LSU in overtime in 2007 inside what was then known as Commonwealth Stadium. The man who won the Heisman Trophy that year, Tim Tebow, explained why the Wildcats’ winning efforts begin on the offensive side of the football.

“I think you have to start with trying to be efficient early on, first and second down in the running game, taking what the defense gives you,” Tebow said on SportsCenter ahead of SEC Nation. “I know it sounds cliche, but maybe it swing passes. Maybe it’s hitches, get something going a little bit, and then when you can get the safeties to creep up a little bit because they hate giving up yards in the running game — then you have to be aggressive with your deep shots.

“And when you get those one on one opportunities, you can’t miss because you don’t know when you’re going to get it again. Their DBs, their secondary, their safeties are too good. They fly around, so when you do get it one on one, you can’t miss. When you have that opportunity, you have to take advantage.”

Georgia’s defense hasn’t allowed a touchdown in its last 12 quarters of football dating back to last year’s bowl game. In the first two weeks of the 2024 season, the Bulldogs have outscored their opposition 82-6, cruising to two-straight victories against both Clemson and Tennessee Tech.

Meanwhile, in Kentucky’s 31-6 loss in South Carolina in Week 2, UK quarterbacks Brock Vandagriff , a Georgia transfer, and Gavin Wimsatt combined to complete six forward passes during the afternoon matchup.

The Wildcats offense has suffered in recent years thanks to the constant turnover with the offensive coordinator position. Bush Hamdan took over for Liam Coen, and is the fifth time in five seasons head coach Mark Stoops has had to find a new OC. Georgia coach Kirby Smart spoke to this earlier in the week, noting that the UK offense is having the learn an entirely new scheme with Hamdan on staff.

With Vandagriff’s struggles against a mighty South Carolina pass rush on full display in Kentucky’s Week 2 loss, it’s likely the Bulldogs will be aggressive in the same way. With Kentucky’s offensive line and running back room has been banged up early this season along with struggles passing the ball — Georgia will likely take advantage defensively.

Kickoff from inside Kroger Field is set for 7:30 p.m. ET live on ABC.
