The Florida Gators opened SEC play with a loss to Texas A&M. With that, there have been rising questions about head coach Billy Napier and the future of the program under him.

After the game, Napier admitted that the end results haven’t been good enough on the field, though he did emphasize that it’s not all bad within the program.

“I’m not good enough,” Billy Napier said . “Not good enough against Miami . Not good enough today. We’ve done a lot of good behind the scenes in terms of building infrastructure. We’ve got a great organization, but the quality of football in the opener and today, not up to standard.”

Billy Napier was hired following the 2021 season with the hopes that he could elevate the program to the top of the SEC. However, that hasn’t happened. Now three games into his third season, Napier has a 12-16 record, and with a very difficult schedule ahead, it doesn’t seem likely more wins are on the way in 2024.

“I think we’ve played some good football at times and gotten beat, and maybe I’d have been able to stand up here and say, ‘Hey, we did a lot of good things, we’re close,'” Napier said. “But that’s not been the case. So, that’s the facts. We have to do much better.”

Amid all of that, Napier does believe that Florida has made progress during his tenure, even though it’s not showing up on the field.

“I think that we’ve made progress in a lot of areas. I just don’t think that the quality of that football out there is what I would like,” Napier said. “And look, again, we’ve got a lot of people taking ownership that are not in this room, and I think that’s a good thing. But we’ve got to get it fixed.”

The Florida Gators are now 1-2 on the season. Next week, they’ll look to find some success on the field when they travel on the road to Starkville to play Mississippi State .

Billy Napier reacts to Florida fans booing him, chanting for change

As Billy Napier left the field after the Texas A&M loss, Florida fans booed him . It’s a reaction to the on-field struggles that Napier seems to understand.

“I have no negative comment about that,” Napier said .

“Ultimately, when you play a certain way in this arena, you’re gonna be criticized. This is one of those places where there’s history and tradition and expectations and a lot of really good football teams have played in this stadium in the past. When you play ugly ball, and maybe it didn’t look like we all wanted it to, it comes with the territory. So I probably would’ve done the same thing.”
