Amid a difficult start to the season, there has been some talk that Florida State head coach Mike Norvell could be on the hot seat. However, that’s not something that ESPN’s Paul Finebaum agrees with.

During an appearance on SportsCenter , Finebaum reacted to the talk that Norvell’s seat could be heating up, shooting it down for the time being.

“I make a living doing hot seat lists,” Paul Finebaum said. “But I am out on this one. I really like Mike Norvell. I know that’s not soothing to the Florida State fans right now but remember he was in the Alabama contention a few months ago.”

The rumors that Mike Norvell could be in the discussions to get the Alabama job helped earn him an extension with Florida State. That new extension was for eight years and $84 million. It also came with a very steep buyout of $65 million. That’s 85 percent of his base salary and supplemental pay for the remainder of his contract, which doesn’t expire until December 31, 2031.

That buyout is massive and, from Finebaum’s perspective, is going to help buy Norvell time to turn things around for the time being.

“He got a new contract. There’s no way they’re firing him,” Finebaum said. “There’s no way they’re buying him out. Calm down, at least for now.”

Mike Norvell was hired in 2020 and was tasked with rebuilding the Florida State program. It took some time to get things going, but he did eventually build the Seminoles up and won 23 games combined in the 2022 and 2023 seasons. During that stretch, Florida State won the ACC and nearly made the College Football Playoff .

Now, Norvell and the Seminoles are looking to turn things around when they host the Cal Golden Bears next Saturday.

Mike Norvell press conference ended by fire alarm going off following Memphis loss

As Florida State struggled on the field in the team’s loss to Memphis , off the field it didn’t seem like things were going much better when Mike Norvell had his press conference ended early by a fire alarm .

For his part, Norvell was attempting to answer a question about how Florida State will work through its current struggles, when the alarm sounded and a voice from it said, “Attention, there is a fire emergency in the building. You are to leave the building by the nearest exit or exit stairwell.”

Coming off a bye week, the Seminoles once again struggled, this time in a non-conference game against Memphis. The hope moving forward is that the offense can find a way to consistently move the ball and translate success in practice into success during games.
